What Is Rotator Cuff Calcification?
Rotator cuff calcification, also known as calcific tendinitis, occurs when calcium deposits build up in the tendons of your rotator cuff. These deposits irritate the surrounding tissue, causing inflammation, stiffness, and pain—especially during overhead or rotational arm movements.
Common Symptoms:
- Sharp or aching pain in the top or outer shoulder
- Pain at night, especially when lying on the affected side
- Reduced range of motion
- Sudden spikes in pain (if a deposit ruptures)
- Weakness or catching sensation when lifting the arm

Why It Happens
There’s no single cause, but several risk factors make you more susceptible:
- Repetitive overhead motion (think swimmers, painters, golfers)
- Age-related tendon degeneration
- Poor shoulder mechanics or posture
- Unknown metabolic changes in calcium regulation
It’s not a result of trauma—it’s a wear-and-tear condition, often affecting people who still want to stay active but can’t because the pain won’t go away.
Traditional Treatment Options (And Their Limits)
Most physicians start conservatively with:
- NSAIDs or corticosteroid injections
- Physical therapy
- Iontophoresis or ultrasound therapy
- Rest and modified activity
But here’s the problem: many patients get temporary or partial relief, only for the pain to return—especially if the calcium deposits are large, hardened, or embedded deep in the tendon.
Surgery can remove the deposits, but it comes with downtime, potential complications, and the risk of damaging healthy tendon tissue.

How Ortho Las Vegas Treats Rotator Cuff Calcification Differently
We don’t default to pills or scalpels. Instead, we take a precision-based approach to treatment using advanced diagnostics and regenerative options—including ultrasound-guided barbotage, platelet-rich plasma (PRP), and shockwave therapy—to resolve calcific buildup, reduce inflammation, and restore shoulder function.
Our Treatment Toolbox:
Diagnostic Ultrasound + MRI
To accurately measure the size, location, and density of the calcium deposits.
Barbotage (Needling & Lavage)
A minimally invasive technique where we break up and flush out calcium deposits using a fine needle under ultrasound guidance.
Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)
After barbotage or as a standalone option, we may inject PRP into the shoulder to stimulate natural healing and accelerate tendon recovery.
Shockwave Therap
In cases where deposits are smaller or not fully hardened, shockwave therapy can help dissolve calcium buildup non-invasively.

Are You a Candidate?
You may be a strong candidate if:
- You’ve had shoulder pain for 3+ months that hasn’t improved with conservative care
- Imaging confirms calcium deposits in your rotator cuff tendons
- You want to avoid surgery or long-term steroid use
- You’re looking for a targeted solution with minimal downtime
This approach isn’t right for everyone. In rare cases, surgery may still be needed. But for most patients, our blended orthopedic + orthobiologic model delivers lasting relief without the scalpel.
What to Expect
Consultation
We’ll perform a thorough exam and review your imaging (or order updated scans if needed).
Personalized Plan
Based on the size/location of deposits, we’ll map out the most effective path forward—often a combination of barbotage + PRP.
In-Office Treatment
Most procedures are done in-office with no general anesthesia and minimal recovery time.
Guided Rehab
You’ll get a tailored rehab protocol to regain strength and range of motion safely.
Ongoing Support
Our team tracks your progress and makes real-time adjustments as needed.
